Extreme heat and raging wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

Widespread Heatwave Warnings Across the Region

This situation follow this month's fires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Global Climatic Events Cause Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in darkness recently after powerful gusts damaged the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to create ongoing issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by unprecedented fall rainfall that resulted in soils saturated.

Severe Weather Delivers Snow to Holiday Islands

Turning to another country, a weather system has ushered in intense rain, powerful winds and even snowfall to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this popular tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snow, strong winds from the north swept across the island chain, with gusts exceeding 50mph observed on several islands. The effect of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more typical conditions returning.
