Sandy Baltimore Spot-Kick Saves The Blues After Dutch Side Nearly Cause WCL Upset

The Champions League continues to be Chelsea's hard-to-catch prize. They crave it intensely. Yet, their credentials took a hit in the Netherlands, a 1-1 draw against Twente not at all the ideal start to a tournament they aim to dominate.

Despite their dominance in possession, the home side who took the lead, via skipper Danique van Ginkel, before Sandy Baltimore scored from the spot for the equaliser.

Domestic Dominance Yet Continental Heartbreak

Each piece of silverware is precious, but for the squad that has repeatedly won it all, the longing for the missing trophy is powerful. It eluded them during Emma Hayes’ reign, defeat to Barcelona in the 2020-21 final the closest they got. Three straight semi-final defeats to Barcelona, featuring an 8-2 aggregate loss last season, have hurt on every occasion.

Team Changes Takes Its Toll

The manager showcased her squad's depth for the trip to the Netherlands, with only four starters from the previous match on the pitch, but it proved expensive as they began their European journey under a new format – the initial phase replaced by expanded stage akin to the male competition.

The two sides met during the previous group stage, with the Blues inflicting a heavy overall defeat on the Dutch champions. Van Ginkel stated they'd look somewhat different after a year. “I hope we've matured a bit and can address our past mistakes,” she said.

Home Side's Growth Evident

At their stadium that maturity was evident, Twente didn't attempt to match the Blues' pressure or battle individually, they proved an efficient unit, irritating the Blues who launched repeated attacks toward the goal.

Twente's players celebrate their captain following the opening goal.

However, the hosts created the best opportunity of the half. Leonie Vliek had room following a smart one-two with a teammate, yet rather of shooting she squared to their top scorer but the effort was cleared by a defender.

There was energy yet missing cohesion, the changes having an impact, especially in the final third. Maika Hamano should have done better from a cutback but fired over from the spot in their best effort, and the goalkeeper helped keep Twente in it.

Second Half Drama

In the second half, a recent addition scored a goal, turning in a low cross, yet the assistant was raised, the provider having been in an illegal position.

The coach looked to her bench to try to change the game soon after. Two players were replaced, one due to a concussion, for fresh legs and an ex- hosts' star.

Wasted Opportunities

The home side created a clear opportunity to go ahead just before the 60-minute point. Having won possession in attack, a low cross found a player in the box yet a challenge denied the chance.

The hosts' chances were limited and as each passed without a goal, it seemed that Twente would be punished. However, it was the Blues ruing their wastefulness. A pass back found Van Ginkel and she shifted onto her right foot and struck past the goalkeeper.

Leveling Penalty

Chelsea kept pushing. They have not produced thrilling displays this season yet they've secured results and away from home they continued that trend. A foul on a player gave the visitors a penalty, although they might have earned one sooner when a late boot hit a teammate. Baltimore converted to make it even.

A victory escaped them, yet they possess chances to recover against upcoming opponents before facing familiar foes and title winners.
