Wilfried Nancy stated he had no concerns about losing his job, claiming, “We are very near to things turning around,” even after sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a heavy defeat by their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Collapse Results in Old Firm Defeat
Celtic were in front their oldest rivals at half-time but a second-half capitulation enabled Danny Röhl’s team to draw level on points with the defending league title holders. The former MLS manager, who was hired in December, has now been in charge for six defeats in his last eight games.
“There is unity at the club,” insisted Nancy.
Questioned about the speculation, he replied: “It’s not on my mind. I think about discovering solutions to aid my players to improve on the fine details.
Fan Fury Outside Parkhead
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – towards the board and manager – by gathering outside the stadium. The board would be most likely to re-appoint the interim manager, who enjoyed a successful temporary stint before Nancy was hired, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. Yet in stating that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am a defeatist guy. No. My point is we are really close, imminently close to reverse our form.”
Nancy’s Persistent Belief
He highlights the fact Celtic can perform strongly for one half at a time. For instance, but for missed chances they might have been more than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit other than the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I must remain objective.
“The standard we had at times was really, really, really high. That happened. And I would not talk like that if it was not the case. But that’s why, when it comes to wins, I said it's a repeating pattern. For that reason I believe a change is coming to a shift in fortunes. Right now: small things.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. The issue now it’s about consistency. My outlook would not be the same. Therefore I am a big believer we’re going to be able to get back on track.”
Opposition Reaction Stance
Danny Röhl was cautious about a title charge even after what seemed like a statement victory. “We take it game by game, so we can really build up momentum,” he said. “The belief in the group is outstanding.”
